Charter

HORIZON is a professional development resource for the Royal Australian Navy. It is designed to help sailors and officers sharpen their skills, develop new concepts and ideas for consideration and share their experiences.

As a HORIZON User, you agree to abide by the HORIZON Charter. This is your commitment to be part of our community.

The HORIZON Charter is simple. To use the site, you just have to reflect the Defence values. For HORIZON, these translate as follows:

• Service. You will share and foster stories and examples of selflessness and reflect on what it means to serve the nation. Give freely of your own experiences, successes and challenges in service of those who may learn from your perspectives and ideas.
• Courage. You will have the courage to present your ideas openly and frankly, and to challenge others in a way that is always constructive.
• Respect. You will treat every other member of the community with respect. You all come to HORIZON for the same reason: to share experience, and enhance our Navy’s Intellectual Edge.
• Integrity. You will work for the benefit of the Team, as well as for yourself. You will remain humble, and help those who seek advice. Arrogance and scorn have no place.
• Excellence. You will strive to take part in open discussion and debate, only through this can we achieve Excellence through learning.

HORIZON is innovative in the way it seeks to reduce a rank-focus, and instead lean towards the idea that we are all professionals on a journey towards mastery of our chosen profession. However, with this ‘flat’ approach comes responsibility. All users of HORIZON must be mature enough to respect the freedoms HORIZON provides. Those who prove themselves lacking in maturity will be blocked from the conversation.
